hi guys,
As someone who's suffering the MFD2 in my MkV Golf R32, a couple of points.

First, it usually comes with a remote Cd autochanger, in the armrest in the Golf, sometimes in the Glovebox.

But, if you want the VW accessory iPod kit (or any 3rd-party ones), you lose the autochanger. They don't tell you that when they take your £30k.

Worse, although one of the main MFD2 features is dynamic traffic routing through TMC it doesn't work in the UK 'cos Volkswagen havn't paid the license (!!)

Als, some nice features like showing banks and cashpoints don't show up because the data isn't on the DVD.

There are a lot of MFD2s for sale here as people rip them out for Alpine or Pioneer sets, which is what I'd have done if I'd know all this before ticking the £1800 option.

Jeff,

On the MkV golf, if you spec your car with CD/DVD MFD2, it will come standard with 6CD changer under arm rest. Over the past few months VW have added the ipod kit onto the options list. It does say on the option list if you order MFD2 you have the options of either CD Changer OR ipod link.
I know the sales personal should have made your aware of this, but at the end of the day its up to you to find out whats will be included in the package. There are so many things in the car they can tell you about it, and you will be ending up spending hours just to go over each items on the car.

When i collected my car just over a year ago, first thing i test and notice was TMC not working. Dealer had the car for a number of times to investgate and VW UK were also involved. Because mine was the early 2006 spec golf with DVD MFD2, it took time sometime to find that they are not licensed to use TMC in UK but licensed anywhere else across EU. This also appled to the Audi DVD RNS. However, the CD version of MFD2 fully support TMC in UK.

Until around about 5 months ago, Audi have release updated software to support TMC on their A8, A6 (may be A4 too) RNS and soon also be available for the A3. So i guessing VW will soon make TMC available on the Golf, Jetta, Passat and Touraq. I know how you feel not having TMC feature, but having used TMC enabled SatNav for 3 years before i had the Mk5, unless the system have improve alot else you wont' be missing much. They never have up-to-date info, and when you do recieve the warning you will have to get think twice is it worth using the Detour or just carry on.

MFD2 is a good system and it does the job. After market units may have better features and faster loading time but it require more work and doesn't blend in with the dash. As for want infomration you get from the system will be mainly down to which map provider you using. VW use Tech Atlas which isn't very good, I used to use NavTech which i found it much better (at least thats what i found when using it in UK). Having more POI is good but not the end of the world if abit lack of them. Not having road names on the map is abit disappointing.

How well does the SAT NAV work in HK? I heard from some people that because the lack of coverage in certain areas due to high rise buildings and density of the roads, the error is 20-30%?

RCD 500? You are probably driving a Passat or R32. You can get one from DCH but it costs around HK$30,000 for a new one. For used one, you can go ebay.co.uk and find one. Mine is also from eBay.

Hope this helps.

gary,

MAPKING's map will not work with MFD2 as the format required is different from the MFD2 one.

adrian,

Nice. So you have both Mk1 and Mk5! MFD2 requires CANBUS. You will probably need a CANBUS emulator to connect it to your car in order to make it to work. My friend (Paper Gor) told me that.

Guys,
how do you connect audio/video to MFD2 through AUX? Is there an AUX socket somewhere in the glove box? Or do you need to take the MFD2 out to find a socket on the back side?

Thanks
