I always have a “mods wish list” for my Golf. I share this wish list with a lot of people - my girlfriend, Ming sir, Aric, Paper Gor, Vorsichtians, etc. But just in case if you don’t know anything about my wish list, here you go:
- BBS CH 18″ wheels for Volkswagen Golf MK5 (CH025, PCD 5×112, ET50)
- Votex Body Kit for Volkswagen Golf MK5 (non-GTI)
- Volkswagen MFD2 Satellite Navigation System
I got the wheels in August last year (2005) so I will skip this one here. I love the Votex body kit a lot but it is just too expensive so I will probably abandon this one. The last item in the wish list is the MFD2. MFD2 is a Volkswagen Satellite Navigation System with radio. It has better sound quality than the RCD 300 which came along with my Golf. It has a wide format 16:9 6.5″ colour screen that gives you full colour maps and driving directions with accompanied voice instructions. The unit is capable for optional CD changer, TV tuner, DVD player, Playstation or other video games. The following is a picture of the unit:

Thanks Ming sir for sharing the photo. For more photos, please visit http://www.sorfamily.net/photo/main.php?g2_itemId=9451.
Yes. I would like to get this. I would like to get this because:
- The LCD screen is so beautiful. It will display a big VW logo in the middle when you start the engine.
- The sound quality is better than the RCD 300. If I get the MFD2, I don’t need to upgrade the speaker systems.
- It can connect other video and audio source thru AUX.
- I can keep using the steering wheel controls to control this headunit (most of the aftermarket headunits just can’t do this).
Even though I want to get it, I still need the “approval” from my “boss”. But it is ok. I am sure that I will get it eventually but just don’t know when.
You probably want to know how the LCD looks like when playing DVD thru AUX. The following are two video clips that I found on YouTube. They will tell everything you want to know. Enjoy.
Hey, i think you should get the MFD2… i better not say anymore as i dont’ want to upset you. I will get a video play connect to mine then let you know whats the sccreen results like.
PS: We will looking out for a Votex Kit for you…
Aric
hey dude~ I will get the MMS on my Golf MK4 too
but MFD2 is more powerful!!
Ha. Thanks Aric gor. Please let me know the test result of your video setup.

Paper Gor, you have so many good stuff which I don’t have.
hi guys,
As someone who’s suffering the MFD2 in my MkV Golf R32, a couple of points.
First, it usually comes with a remote Cd autochanger, in the armrest in the Golf, sometimes in the Glovebox.
But, if you want the VW accessory iPod kit (or any 3rd-party ones), you lose the autochanger. They don’t tell you that when they take your £30k.
Worse, although one of the main MFD2 features is dynamic traffic routing through TMC it doesn’t work in the UK ‘cos Volkswagen havn’t paid the license (!!)
Als, some nice features like showing banks and cashpoints don’t show up because the data isn’t on the DVD.
There are a lot of MFD2s for sale here as people rip them out for Alpine or Pioneer sets, which is what I’d have done if I’d know all this before ticking the £1800 option.
Jeff,
On the MkV golf, if you spec your car with CD/DVD MFD2, it will come standard with 6CD changer under arm rest. Over the past few months VW have added the ipod kit onto the options list. It does say on the option list if you order MFD2 you have the options of either CD Changer OR ipod link.
I know the sales personal should have made your aware of this, but at the end of the day its up to you to find out whats will be included in the package. There are so many things in the car they can tell you about it, and you will be ending up spending hours just to go over each items on the car.
When i collected my car just over a year ago, first thing i test and notice was TMC not working. Dealer had the car for a number of times to investgate and VW UK were also involved. Because mine was the early 2006 spec golf with DVD MFD2, it took time sometime to find that they are not licensed to use TMC in UK but licensed anywhere else across EU. This also appled to the Audi DVD RNS. However, the CD version of MFD2 fully support TMC in UK.
Until around about 5 months ago, Audi have release updated software to support TMC on their A8, A6 (may be A4 too) RNS and soon also be available for the A3. So i guessing VW will soon make TMC available on the Golf, Jetta, Passat and Touraq. I know how you feel not having TMC feature, but having used TMC enabled SatNav for 3 years before i had the Mk5, unless the system have improve alot else you wont’ be missing much. They never have up-to-date info, and when you do recieve the warning you will have to get think twice is it worth using the Detour or just carry on.
MFD2 is a good system and it does the job. After market units may have better features and faster loading time but it require more work and doesn’t blend in with the dash. As for want infomration you get from the system will be mainly down to which map provider you using. VW use Tech Atlas which isn’t very good, I used to use NavTech which i found it much better (at least thats what i found when using it in UK). Having more POI is good but not the end of the world if abit lack of them. Not having road names on the map is abit disappointing.
How well does the SAT NAV work in HK? I heard from some people that because the lack of coverage in certain areas due to high rise buildings and density of the roads, the error is 20-30%?
Hay guys, I am looking for a MFD2 to replace my RCD500. can someone help. I live in HKG too.
RCD 500? You are probably driving a Passat or R32. You can get one from DCH but it costs around HK$30,000 for a new one. For used one, you can go ebay.co.uk and find one. Mine is also from eBay.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, I saw a couple of them but can they be trust?
do you have any good ebay seller to recommend?
tks
Try this guy:

I was told that he was quite reliable.
BTW, are you going to install it with DVD player or something?
Thanks 9527, I have a ipod connector may be adding a dvd player or connect it with ipod video too, not sure yet. “I Love DIY”.
BTY have you try MAPKING with the machine?
does it work? Nissan Elgrand does.
hi
i’m in South africa , they charging R39 000 for the MFD2 DVD , I have a GolfV , but i want to install it into my Mk1 cabriolet’s centre console , what do you think?
regards
adria
gary,
MAPKING’s map will not work with MFD2 as the format required is different from the MFD2 one.
adrian,
Nice. So you have both Mk1 and Mk5! MFD2 requires CANBUS. You will probably need a CANBUS emulator to connect it to your car in order to make it to work. My friend (Paper Gor) told me that.
請問在網上買MFD2連運費大約要港帑多少?是否要另裝機頭才能看電視?而且在那裡安裝比較安全?
thanks
Raman

Hi,
I also interest MFD2 for my Golf GT, I found different version of it in ebay, such as ver B or ver C, do you know what is the different ? Any compatible problem of the radio if I buy from UK ? Can it work with my original CD Changer ?
Thanks for help
Forget to say, I live in Hong Kong too. thanks.
Guys,
how do you connect audio/video to MFD2 through AUX? Is there an AUX socket somewhere in the glove box? Or do you need to take the MFD2 out to find a socket on the back side?
Thanks
@ adrian
