My Golf is Back!

My Golf is finally back. I picked up my car with my girl friend tonight. The following are my observations so far:

  1. No more fault lights (of course!)
  2. Most of the rattles are gone. The car cabin is now more quiet.
  3. The noise (the “yeeeeek” sound) from the left rear brake is still there … :(
  4. No more “click click” sound from the front after replacing the “bearing”

I still do not have much time to test my car intensively but will do so in the next few days. Stay tuned. ;)

Days Without My iMac and My Golf

My iMac went dead. My Golf is sick. Sigh!

My iMac

My iMac kept turning itself off either during boot-up (before start-up chime) or during use (after boot-up) without any warning sign or error message. I tried resetting the SMU/SMC, PRAM and NVRAM on my iMac about a week ago. It worked fine for the first few days but the problem was back again after that. And now I can’t even turn it on! I called Apple Tech Support yesterday morning to report my problem. I was led through a few troubleshooting tasks, which were the same I had done myself before, but none of which worked. The support person then asked me to run the Apple Hardware Test by booting to a CD (the Mac OS X Disc 2) that came with my iMac. But how come I can do this when my iMac is not working at all! Sigh! Anyway, they promised to send a technician on-site to check my iMac this week. So let’s see.

Update (21st Feb 2006): The technician showed up at around 4:30pm. He checked my iMac and found that both the logic board and the power supply had problem by checking the diagnostic LEDs. My iMac is still under warranty so they will replace them for free but they don’t have stock now. They will need to order them from Singapore.

Update (22nd Feb 2006): Parts ordered but no shipment date yet. I was told that it would take at least a week. Dan!

Update (1st Mar 2006): The logic board arrived but the service center is still waiting for the power supply. Once they have everything on hand they will come and replace them. Thanks Tom for the update.

My Golf

When I was driving to meet my girlfriend this afternoon, the “EPC” light suddenly came on on my dashboard. I was like, “Oh fxxk.” Although the EPC light came on, I couldn’t feel any difference and my Golf was still running without hiccups. I drove to the carpark where I would meet my girlfriend in the first hand. After a quick discussion with her, we decided to drive my Golf to the dealership. But when I started the engine again, the exhaust fault light came on as well. I had no choice at that point so I drove my car directly to the service center in Kowloon Bay. My dealership is now taking care my Golf. They will fix the issue together with the following items:

  1. Fix the left rear brake noise
  2. Replace the faulty wheel bearing
  3. Fix the compartment rattles

Update (24th Feb 2006): Called Kathy in the afternoon. She told me that the oxygen sensor was broken and that’s why the engine fault light came on. They had replaced a new one for me already. I was told that the brake noise issue and the faulty bearing were fixed and replaced as well respectively. However, they still didn’t have enough time to fix the rattles. It would take a few more days. I am fine as long as they can really fix all these.

Update (28th Feb 2006): Just got a call from Kathy. My car is ready now. I will go picking it up tonight.

Days Without My iMac and My Golf

I am ok but a little bit boring without these 2 things with me. Maybe it is good news to me. I can do something else now.

Vorsicht Spring Dinner

We had our annual Vorsicht Spring Dinner last night. This is my second year joining the event together with other Vorsichtians and Volkswagen drivers. We had lots of fun and surprise last night. We chatted a lot during the dinner. Our topics were not only limited to cars or Volkswagen but anything in the world. For example, Jelly and Nick sir shared their experience on how to maintain good relationship with the love one; CY talked about business. The topics are very interesting and useful to me. Thanks Jelly, Nick sir and CY. ;)

As usual, we had the lucky draw section at the end. I was so lucky last night and won (and traded as well) several prizes …

Lucky Draw Prizes

The first one is a Volkswagen Phaeton 1:43 model car.

Yeah! The second one is a Volkswagen Golf watch. I have a Golf so this watch is a perfect match.

Last but not least, thanks Jelly and DJ for all the arrangement and special thanks to dai fei and VWHK/DCH for the lucky draw prizes.

BlackBerry 8700g

BlackBerry 8700gI have been using the new BlackBerry 8700g for a few weeks although it’s still not available in the market here yet (please don’t ask why I have one). It is more responsive than earlier BlackBerry devices. The experience is very positvie. I love it so much.

BlackBerry 8700g

The BlackBerry 8700g is the latest wireless device from Research In Motion. It shares the same platform/hardware as the BlackBerry 8700c (available in the US from Cingular Wireless) and the BlackBerry 8700r (available in Canada from Rogers Wireless). The only difference is the housing of the device. Everything other than that is exactly the same. The 8700g provides the ultimate balance of performance, design and function. The combined power of the BlackBerry platform, Intel processor and EDGE wireless technolog, enables faster web browsing, application performance and attachment viewing.

The BlackBerry 8700g is a quad-band device with 64 MB flash memory and 16 MB SDRAM. The integrated phone includes premium phone features such as dedicated “send”, “end” and “mute” phone keys, smart dialing, conference calling, speed dial, call forwarding, as well as speakerphone and Bluetooth(r) support for hands-free use with car kits and wireless headsets. In addition, the device features a bright, high resolution, landscape QVGA (320×240) LCD display that supports more than 65,000 colors to deliver vivid graphics. The display offers excellent indoor and outdoor readability by featuring an intelligent light sensing technology that automatically adjusts the brightness to optimize visibility in outdoor, indoor and dark environments. For a little bit of added fun, the 8700g now supports MP3 ringtones. You can simply download MP3 ringtones thru the browser, store them onto the device, and assign the ringtone to your profiles. You can assign ringtones (either MP3 or MIDI polyphonic ringtone) to specific contacts in your address book as well.

The BlackBerry 8700g is definitely a good upgrade for existing BlackBerry users. If you do not have a BlackBerry, you should start thinking about it. The 8700g will be available shortly. Start talking to your mobile carrier and reserve one. ;)

WordPress 2.0.1 and Akismet

WordPress

I have just upgraded my blog to WordPress 2.0.1. 114 bugs have been closed in this release. To summarize:

  • You can now specify an upload directory, and whether to use date-based storage or not.
  • Caching has been fixed under certain PHP enviroments.
  • Permalinks have been fixed for weird enviroments as well.
  • XML-RPC uploading works.
  • Compatibility with older versions of PHP.
  • Several WYSIWYG fixes and cleanups.
  • Imports now use much less memory.
  • Now works with MySQL 5.0 in strict mode.

On the other hand, I have activated the Akismet Plug-in which comes with WordPress 2.0/2.0.1. It can stop comment spam and trackback spam. I’ve got many spam comments recently and Akismet will definitely help filtering them out.
